Hello!
I’m Jeff Applegate, and I'm running for Secretary/Treasurer because I believe the person responsible for our union’s finances should know how to read the books — not just sign them.
I’ve spent over a decade in the room where decisions get made about members’ pension and health benefits — first as a caucus-elected trustee observer, then as a full trustee on the Equity-League Pension and Health plans, and now as co-chair of the plans’ Investment Committee. That work has meant sitting across the table from actuaries, auditors, investment consultants, and fund counsel — learning to ask hard questions, insist on clear answers, and understand not just the numbers but the stakes behind them.
Our Constitution gives the Secretary/Treasurer direct charge of the union’s funds, securities, and financial reporting. That’s a fiduciary responsibility, and I think it deserves someone who’s spent real time doing fiduciary work and deeply engaging not just in the math, but the meaning of numbers.
So yeah, I’m basically that theatre-math geek who feels compelled to combine the two and put numbers center stage within my chosen career. I’m far from the only actor who loves a good spreadsheet, but I’ve spent over a decade embracing that numbers geek in me in service of my fellow actors. And at the urging of many of those I’ve been working with over those years, I’m ready to bring that service from the funds to the union itself.
